Winner of this year’s Archibald Packing Room Prize (2017) Portrait of Lisa Wilkinson AM

*********

Born 1949, Griffith, N.S.W. Australia. Studied Medicine at the University of Sydney 1966-1971 and worked as a family doctor in General Practice at The Entrance NSW for 34 years before changing to full time Art Practice in 2008.

Smeeth has drawn and painted since early childhood. As a retired medical doctor, he has a special interest in the human condition. However he enjoys all forms of art from the totally abstract to the super real. He works in most medias – pencil, pastel, charcoal, watercolour, oil, acrylic, as well as plaster or bronze sculptural work.

In his realist paintings he aims to paint light and space making the flat canvas appear three dimensional.

Smeeth was the winner of the 2010 Mortimore Prize and the 2011 Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. A three time Archibald Prize finalist, four time Salon des Refusés (Wynne) Prize finalist, three-time Doug Moran National Portrait Prize finalist, as well as a five-time Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award finalist.
